1983, May - Derbyshire Life and Countryside
David Whyatt starts his 3-page article with, "The first thing that struck me about St. Elphin's, which I visited last month, was that, for a girls' public school reputed to be one of the oldest in England, it looked surprisingly modern."

St Elphin's Mercury1994, March 25th - Matlock Mercury
To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of St Elphin's School, the Matlcok Mercury produced a special four-page feature, entitled St Elphin's Mercury. It makes for fascinating reading, not only of the various articles, but also some of the adverts! As the file is quite large I have split it into four separate images - one for each page. There is a slight gap across the centre of each page to the way it had been folded but I am sure you will still enjoy the different pages.

Please click on each image below to read the different pages.

2012, November - Reflections
Staging a great reunion – at the school she hated!
On 6th October, 2012 Liz Donlan arranged a School Reunion at St Elphin's Park at which 113 old girls (pupils and teachers) attended. There was also the unveiling of the Invicta Stone which had been tracked down in Oxfordshire by Marianne Jackson (nee Stewart), purchased by Audley, returned to its rightful home at St Elphin's by Marianne and lovingly restored. 2013, March - Reflections
Restored – a magnificent centrepiece
On 27th February, 2013 Audley Court held a 'topping out' ceremony for the next phase of their development at St Elphin's Park – Robinson Court which is named after Miss P M Robinson, Head Mistress, 1957 to 1975. The photo shows, left to right, Ingrid Pasteur, Mayor of Darley Dale; Derbyshire High Sheriff Alan Woods; and Nick Sanderson, Chief Executive of Audley Retirement Village. Photo © Liz Donlan.

Audley's PR department put together an article for the March issue of Reflections but, unfortunately, failed to acknowledge that the bulk of the article (i.e. the historical information) had in fact been provided by Marianne Jackson, plus a little bit of information from Liz Donlan and the small black & white photo on the first page was taken by Arlene Garnier in 1957! The Editor of Reflections was not aware of the lack of credits and these were duly corrected in the May 2013 issue (below) – with an article from Liz Donlan. 2013, May - Reflections
Boarding school – happiest days of your life?
Liz Donlan was delighted to be invited to write an article on the regime at St Elphin's School for the May issue of Reflections magazine. The article was based around her time at St Elphin's from 1967 to 1973. The Editor could only allow space in one issue which was a pity because it meant that Liz had to condense the article considerably and the Editor edited it even further! Nevertheless it still makes for interesting reading and it put a couple more old girls and staff in touch. Please click on the image to read the article in full.

The press release was written by Ali Gracie-Biddiscombe and the photo was taken by Liz Bailey-Donlan.

'Revealed: the area's first 'water hotel'

"The first 'water hotel' around Matlock was not the huge building that is now the County Council headquarters but one that became St Elphin's School in Darley Dale."

Thanks go to Angie Marrows (neé Tye) for alerting me to this fascinating article and to Barrie Farnsworth, Editor and Publisher of Reflections magazine for allowing me to republish the article on this website.
